Holmes founded her own company when she was a teen, selling C++ compilers—a category of software that translates computer code—to Chinese educational institutions. A patent application for a “Medical device for analyte monitoring and drug delivery” was soon submitted by Holmes. By the following semester, Holmes had completely quit Stanford and was working on Theranos in the basement of a student residence. By accepting investor money, Holmes agreed not to disclose the workings of Theranos’ technology..
Prior to Theranos’ downfall, Holmes enjoyed widespread praise. She was chosen to serve on the Harvard Medical School Board of Fellows in 2015.and was listed among “Time 100 Most Influential People” by Time magazine. Her story become the script of many films too.
A $350 million covert partnership between Theranos and Safeway was also established. Theranos received a warning letter from the Centres for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in January 2016 following an inspection of its laboratory in Newark, California, which revealed issues with staff competency, operating procedures, and equipment. In July 2016, CMS imposed a two-year prohibition on Holmes owning, running, or overseeing a blood-testing service.Theranos was sued by the State of Arizona in 2017 on the grounds that it had misrepresented or concealed crucial information when selling 1.5 million blood tests to Arizonans. On January 3, 2022, Holmes was found guilty on three counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud for defrauding investors on four separate occasions.
