Career
Chawla started working at NASA Ames Research Centre in 1988, where she conducted research on computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Chawla had a commercial pilot’s licence and was certified as a flight instructor for aircraft. Chawla was the first Indian woman to travel to space, starting her first mission on November 19, 1997. Chawla was chosen for her second flight as a member of the STS-107 crew in 2000. One of the seven people who perished in the Space Shuttle Columbia accident on February 1, 2003, was Kalpana.
