Professional Career
Cannon was admitted to the Florida Bar in 2012 and the State Bar of California in 2008. She worked as a law clerk for Steven Colloton, an establishment figure who sits on the Eighth Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals in Iowa. She served as an associate attorney with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP in Washington, D.C., from 2009 to 2012. Stephen “Henry” Brinck Jr., a former manager of Thomas Weisel Partners’ fixed income desk, was exonerated of fraud in one case in 2011 after Cannon represented him before the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority.
Cannon served as an assistant US attorney for the Southern District of Florida from 2013 to 2020. When working as a federal prosecutor, Cannon first handled cases involving drugs, weapons, and immigration before transferring to the appellate section to handle convictions and sentences. Anthony Livoti Jr.’s 10-year sentence for insurance fraud was upheld in 2018 after Cannon helped the prosecution win an appeal involving the former attorney of Mutual Benefits Corporation. In 2019, Cannon was a key player in the prosecution’s success in an appeals case involving Scott W. Rothstein, which allowed prosecutors to abandon their push to get the Ponzi schemer’s 50-year sentence reduced. Cannon assisted in getting 41 criminals convicted while working as a prosecutor.
Cannon ruled over the Donald J. Trump v. United States of America case from August to December 2022. Cannon accepted former president Trump’s request for a special master to analyse the evidence and ordered the US government to stop utilising Mar-a-Lago files in its probe. Cannon’s order was overturned by the Eleventh Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals after it was determined that Cannon had improperly asserted jurisdiction over the matter. According to the Eleventh Circuit’s directions, Cannon then dismissed Trump’s complaint.
