Detective John Taglioni unjustly detained Salaam as a suspect in the Central Park jogger case in 1989; Wise was invited to assist Salaam, but the two of them were both interviewed as suspects. Following Donald Trump’s request for the death sentence to be resurrected, Salaam went a full day without eating, drinking, or sleeping, and his family received death threats. Despite the efforts of his counsel Bobby Burns (his mother’s divorce lawyer, who was unprepared for a criminal trial) and the attorneys for the other boys, he was found guilty and sentenced to 5–10 years in a juvenile prison facility.
He was released in 2002 after the verdict was overturned, and he was given $7.1 million in compensation for his time spent. He later began working for a telemarketing firm, and in 2016 President Barack Obama presented him with a lifetime achievement award. He ran for the New York City Council in 2023.
