Clayton started her Civil Rights Movement career in Chicago with the National Urban League. In 1965, Layton relocated to Atlanta, where she managed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s (SCLC) event planning. She oversaw the Doctors’ Committee for Implementation in 1966. The first Southern African American to host a daily prime time talk show was Clayton in 1967. She was a member of the King Centre for Nonviolent Social Change’s board of directors. In the late 2004 establishment of the Trumpet Awards Foundation, she served as its chair, president, and CEO.
Clayton was appointed to the State Motion Picture and Television Commission while he was the governor of Georgia. She belongs to a number of civic and professional groups, including the National Urban League and the Academy for Television Arts and Sciences.
