He received the 1986 Nobel Prize in Literature, becoming the first African to do so.In Abeokuta, Soyinka was born into a Yoruba family. He enrolled at Government College in Ibadan in 1954 and later attended University College Ibadan and Leeds University in England.

In The Lion and the Jewel, The Trials of Brother Jero, Jero’s Metamorphosis, The Road, From Zia, with Love, and even the parody King Baabu , among other plays, he wrote several comedies that made fun of pompous, Westernised schoolteachers. Other noteworthy plays include Death and the King’s Horseman , Madmen and Specialists , and others.Soyinka was a coeditor of Black Orpheus from 1960 to 1964. A Rockefeller Research Fellowship was awarded to Soyinka by University College in Ibadan. The first full-length play produced on Nigerian television was written by Soyinka. The essay “Towards a True Theatre” by Soyinka was published in December 1962. Soyinka increased his political activism after accepting the position of Chair of Drama at the University of Ibadan.As civil war broke out between the Federal government of Nigeria and the Biafrans, he was held captive for 22 months
When the civil war ended in October 1969, an amnesty was declared, and Soyinka and other political prisoners were set free. His book of poetry, A Shuttle in the Crypt, was published in 1971. His Collected Plays and novel Season of Anomy were both released by Oxford University Press in 1972. He released his book of poetry, Ogun Abibiman, in 1976. The Guerrilla Unit is a second theatrical company that Soyinka founded.Soyinka was more politically active from 1975 to 1984.In 1986, Soyinka became the first African laureate after receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Mandela’s Earth, and Other Poems, his collection of poetry, was published in 1988. Soyinka fled from Nigeria to the United States in November 1994 via the Benin-Benin border.Soyinka referred to 2020 as the most difficult year in American history in December 2020.
