American retired actress Susanna “Susan” Kohner had a career in both film and television. She was born in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Paul Kohner, an Austrian-Hungarian film producer, and Lupita Tovar, a Mexican actress with a Hollywood resume. Her father was Jewish, and her mother was Roman Catholic and of Mexican and Irish ancestry. Kohner received an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe for her performance as Sarah Jane in Imitation of Life (1959).

The majority of Kohner’s cinematic appearances took place in the late 1950s and early 1960s, including his co-starring parts in Dino (1957) and The Gene Krupa Story (1959) alongside Sal Mineo.
In Imitation of Life, Kohner played Sarah Jane, a light-skinned black lady who “passes” for white. This was her most well-known performance. The 1934 publication of the same-named novel served as the inspiration for the 1959 movie. In addition, Kohner received two Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Best New Actress for her work in the movie and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Following her part in Imitation of Life, Kohner costarred with Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner in All the Fine Young Cannibals.
On February 4, 1956, Kohner made his television debut in The Alcoa Hour’s “Long After Summer” episode. According to a review in the trade magazine Billboard, she “failed to impress.” Later, she appeared in cameos on a number of TV shows, including Temple Houston, Going My Way, and Hong Kong. In 1962, she costarred with Montgomery Clift in Freud: The Secret Passion, which would be her final film performance. In 1964, she ended her acting career.
