Viswanath co-founded Sadhana: Coalition of Progressive Hindus in 2011 to create a progressive Hindu movement that was committed to social justice, specifically the fight against casteism and racism. Viswanath helped co-found Hindus for Human Rights (HfHR) in 2019. At Columbia University, Viswanath was appointed a Religious Life Advisor in 2020.Women for Afghan Women (WAW), a nonprofit humanitarian organisation, was co-founded by Viswanath in 2001. Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City appointed Viswanath to the Faith-Based Sector Advisory Council in 2020 to provide guidance on the city’s COVID-19 response.
