During his career spanning more than 40 years, General Austin has held a wide array of command and staff posts in a variety of organisations. During his time in the Army, he held many command positions, including those in the corps, battalions, andat the top levels. During the invasion of Iraq in 2003, Mr. Austin demonstrated exceptional leadership while serving as the commander of the 3rd Infantry Division of the Army. As a result, he was presented with the Silver Star. Austin was the first Black person to ever hold the position of commander of CENTCOM.
The Defence Distinguished Service Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and a great number of other honours and decorations have been bestowed upon General Austin. The President of the United States, Joe Biden, put Austin’s name up for the position of Secretary of Defence in the year 2020.
