Later, DeSantis served as a federal prosecutor. In Dreams from Our Founding Fathers: First Principles in the Age of Obama, which he published in 2011, he outlined his brand of conservatism and decried the president’s policies. DeSantis declared in 2018 that he was running for governor of Florida after receiving Trump’s support. DeSantis was chosen to serve in Congress for the first time in 2012 and was returned in 2014 and 2016.As governor, DeSantis opposed many of the COVID-19 prevention measures that other state governments implemented, including the requirement for face masks, stay-at-home orders, and vaccination laws.
DeSantis was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy in 2004 while enrolled in his second year of law school at Harvard. He was then assigned to the Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps.On January 8, 2019, DeSantis took the oath of office and prefiled it with the Florida secretary of state. DeSantis also gave abortion his full attention, and in April 2022 he signed legislation outlawing the procedure after 15 weeks. DeSantis was thought to be setting himself up for the 2024 presidential election with these divisive policies. But in 2022, he first had to run for reelection as governor. Charlie Crist, a former Republican who is now a Democrat and was governor of Florida from 2007 to 2011, was his main rival. November’s election was easily won by DeSantis.
