More than five months after the position became vacant, Nitin Agarwal, an IPS officer from the Kerala cadre class of 1989, was named the next director general of the Border Security Force (BSF) on Sunday night. Agarwal is currently employed in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) headquarters in Delhi as the Additional DG of operations.
Agarwal has been appointed as the BSF DG “from the date of joining the post and up to 31.07.2026, his date of superannuation, or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” according to an order from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) published late at night. Since Pankaj Kumar Singh’s retirement on December 31, 2022, the position of BSF head has been vacant for more than five months.
Agarwal has worked in a variety of positions in his cadre state of Kerala in addition to serving in the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), another border security agency under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The BSF and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) commenced their bi-annual four-day border discussions in Delhi the day after Agarwal’s appointment.
