In the beginning of his professional life, Murlikant Petkar served in the Indian Army. Private duty in the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers was assigned to him after he joined the army. Due to the serious gunshot wounds he received while fighting Pakistan in 1965, he was rendered unable to fight. Petkar began his training to become an armourer as soon as he was relocated to Secunderabad, and at the same time, he began intensifying his preparations for the Nationals.
At the Summer Paralympics in 1968, he took part in the table tennis competition. When Petkar competed in the swimming discipline at the 1972 Paralympic Games, he created a name for himself almost immediately by setting a new world mark . In subsequent years, he worked as an employee with TELCO in Pune. After becoming the first Indian athlete to ever win a gold medal in the Paralympics, he became immense popular in the nation.
