Professional Career
Miles is the CEO and creator of Third Future Schools, which consults 4,500 charter schools in Texas, Louisiana, and Colorado. Miles started the consulting business in 2016 after retiring as Dallas Independent School District superintendent after three years. Miles resigned as DISD superintendent in 2015, two years before his five-year contract expired. He left when the then-superintendent failed to negotiate a contract agreement with DISD board members.
According to the Dallas Morning News, Miles asked that school boards modify various revisions to his contract, focusing on the district’s hunt for his replacement and his $50,000 salary incentive at the end of his five-year tenure. After discussions failed, Miles resigned and wanted to return to Colorado Springs to be with his family. DISD superintendent Miles met now-Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath, a 2011–2016 board member.
Based on his DISD administration history, the Dallas Morning News called Miles’ tenure “turbulent”. Dallas teachers and local school leaders disapproved with his tactics, including a difficult teacher evaluation process and removing several district principals despite community and school concerns. Miles joined DISD in 2012 following six years as Harrison School District Two superintendent in Colorado Springs.
Miles was appointed as CEO of Pike Peak Prep charter school after leaving DISD and was renowned as a “no-nonsense” administrator, according to the Gazette. After a year, a civil action accused him of violation of contract, unlawful use of the company’s time and resources, and unfairly pushing challenging children to be managed outside the school. He resigned from the charter school. Miles rejected all charges.
Miles was a U.S. Army Ranger and State Department diplomat before entering academia. Miles’ Third Future Schools did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday afternoon.
