Professional Career
From 2016 to 2017, McCord served as the U.S. Department of Justice’s acting assistant attorney general for national security. From 2014 to 2016, he served as the position’s principal deputy.
Prior to this, McCord spent nearly 20 years as an assistant US attorney in the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. She held a number of posts, including Chief of the Criminal Division, where she managed all criminal prosecutions in federal district court, and Deputy Chief in the Appellate Division, where she oversaw and argued hundreds of cases in the U.S. and District of Columbia Courts of Appeals.
McCord has written for publications such as the Washington Post, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, The Atlantic, Slate, Lawfare, and Just Security regarding domestic terrorism, illegal militia activities, public safety, and the rule of law. She has made appearances on CNN, MSNBC, ABC, PBS, NPR, and other media.
Based on her work with ICAP suing white nationalists and private militias that attended the Unite the Right march in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017, McCord was given the Oliver White Hill Courageous Advocate Award by the Virginia Trial Lawyers’ Association in 2018.
The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court and Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review have officially named McCord as an amicus curiae. Following the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, Speaker Nancy Pelosi nominated McCord as legal counsel to the Task Force 1-6 Capitol Security Review of the U.S. House of Representatives. Additionally, McCord was a member of the Columbus Police After Action Review Team, whose job it was to assess how the Columbus, Ohio, Police Department handled the protests in the summer of 2020.
