She attended the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, which is located in Evanston, Illinois. After completing her studies there, she was given a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism and received departmental honours in history. She enlisted in the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Programme when she was a student at Northwestern and received her commission in 1985.
President Biden selected her to succeed Michael M. Gilday as CNO on July 21, 2023. She would be the first female CNO and Joint Chiefs member if confirmed.
