In 2006, Noem was successful in her attempt to join the South Dakota House of Representatives on the Republican ticket. In 2010, she defeated her Republican primary opponent, South Dakota Secretary of State Chris Nelson, then won the election with a majority of 42 percent of the vote. On March 8, 2011, she made the announcement that a leadership political action committee called KRISTI PAC would be formed.
Noem served on the House Armed Services Committee from 2013 to 2015. On January 5, 2019, Kristi Noem became the first woman to ever hold the position of Governor of South Dakota when she was sworn into office. In 2022, Governor Noem won reelection with the highest percentage of the vote in South Dakota’s entire history.
