Keechant Sewell has worked as a police officer for 22 years. She also contributed to history by becoming the first Black chief. Prior to that, she was promoted to a number of leadership positions where she managed hostage negotiations and oversaw important cases. She also established and oversaw the department’s Standards Bureau.
She currently holds the position of Commissioner of Police for New York City. Sewell joined the Fifth Precinct of the Nassau County Police Department as a police officer in October 1997. Mayor-elect Eric Adams announced on December 14, 2021, that Sewell would become the 45th police commissioner of New York City. Sewell was formally sworn in as the department’s first female commissioner since it was established 176 years earlier.
