Who is Kasari Govender?
Kasari Govender is the Executive Director of West Coast LEAF (Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund), which uses public legal education, litigation, and legislation change to combat gender discrimination. She also represents the organisation in equality rights litigation at all levels of court and co-authored “Blueprint for an Inquiry: Lessons from the Failures of the Missing Women Commission of Inquiry” in 2012. Kasari practised constitutional, equity, and aboriginal law before joining West Coast LEAF. Professional Career
Kasari Govender was an Adjunct Professor of Law at UBC, a Pivot Legal Society Board member, and a Coalition on Public Legal Services co-chair. The Vancouver-based Rise Women’s Legal Centre’s founding president. She became B.C.’s first independent Human Rights Commissioner on September 3, 2019. Her responsibility is to promote and preserve human rights in British Columbia through the Office of the Human Rights Commissioner.
Govender has dedicated her life to supporting human rights, particularly those of marginalized and disadvantaged groups. She is dedicated to promoting equality and justice in British Columbia through her legal and community building talents. She collaborates with organisations and communities to promote gender equality, Indigenous rights, children’s rights, disability rights, and migrant rights.
Kasari led West Coast LEAF from 2008 to 2019, including as Executive Director in 2011. She has co-authored valuable studies and publications and frequently discusses topics including violence against women, access to justice, human rights, and hate speech regulation. Significant contributions include founding the non-profit Rise Women’s Legal Centre in British Columbia.
