Professional Career
After completing a two-year naval campaign against Spain, Donne was appointed Sir Thomas Egerton’s private secretary in 1598.He was appointed dean of Saint Paul’s Cathedral in 1621. Donne’s writing in his later years reflected his worry about his impending death. During a period of severe illness, he wrote his private prayers, Devotions upon Emergent Occasions, and they were first published in 1624. Donne was chosen to represent the Brackley constituency as a member of parliament (MP) in 1602. Pseudo-Martyr and Ignatius His Conclave for Morton are two anti-Catholic polemics that Donne wrote in 1610 and 1611. Donne’s early poetry, particularly his elegi es, was notable for its erotic content.
Over the years, his work has drawn a lot of criticism, particularly with regard to his metaphysical form. Donne is regarded as a master of the extended metaphor known as the metaphysical conceit, which unites two concepts that are very dissimilar into a single concept. Donne is honoured for his life as a poet and a priest in the Calendar of Saints of the Church of England, the Episcopal Church, and the Calendar of Saints of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. His memorial day is on March 31.
A number of poetical tributes were written after Donne passed away, with his friend Lord Herbert of Cherbury’s “Elegy for Doctor Donne” being one of the most notable (and challenging to read). A number of historical novels with various Donne-related events as their subjects first appeared in the 20th century. Even in the century that followed Donne’s death and during his lifetime, there were musical adaptations of his lyrics. Among them were Alfonso Ferrabosco Jr.
