Birkin was born in London, and she began her career as an actor with appearances in supporting roles in the films Blowup (1966) and Kaleidoscope (1966), both directed by Michelangelo Antonioni. She first became acquainted with Serge Gainsbourg in 1968, when the two of them were cast in the same production of Slogan. This meeting was the beginning of a professional and personal connection that lasted for many years. Gainsbourg directed Birkin in the controversial film Je t’aime me non plus (1976), which was also the year that the couple produced their first album together, which was titled Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg and was published in 1969. In the Agatha Christie adaptations Death on the Nile (1978) and Evil Under the Sun (1982), Birkin would go on to earn more acting honours.
Following their divorce in 1980, Jane Birkin maintained her career as an actor and singer by starring in a number of indie films and releasing a large number of solo records. She made her debut in the television miniseries Red Fox in 1991, and two years later, she participated in the American drama film A Soldier’s Daughter Never Cries. She was the mother of three children: the photographer Kate Barry, the actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg, and the musician Lou Doillon, who she had with her first husband, John Barry; Charlotte Gainsbourg, who she had with Serge Gainsbourg; and Lou Doillon, who she had with Jacques Doillon. She is known for her work in the music industry as well as acting, and she is honoured by having the Hermès Birkin handbag bear her name.
