Jaco-Albert van Gass is a British para-cycling track racer from South Africa. South African-born Van Gass came into the world on August 20, 1986. Moving to the UK at 20, he joined the British Armed Forces. He joined the Parachute Regiment in mid-2007 after finishing training. In 2009, a rocket-propelled grenade killed his lower left arm, punctured internal organs, collapsed his lung, and caused shrapnel, blast, and leg fractures during his second deployment to Afghanistan. The Tokyo 2020 Paralympics brought him two gold and one bronze medals. He has three track cycling world records.

Professional Career
Van Gass learnt to ski and competed with the Combined Services Disabled Ski Team. He was the first South African to climb Manaslu, the eighth highest peak in the world at 8,164 metres, in 2011. He failed to ascend Mount Everest in 2012 owing to bad weather. Marathons have also been accomplished by him.
Disabled servicemen and Prince Harry marched 335 kilometres to the South Pole in December 2013 to raise money for Walking With The Wounded. This donated £1.5 million towards wounded troops’ sports rehabilitation. Van Gass then became a cyclist and joined the Paralympic Development Programme in 2013. In September 2014, he won two cycling golds at the Invictus Games. British Cycling’s Paralympic Academy Programme has included him since 2014.
At his 2015 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships debut, Van Gass placed seventh in the solo pursuit and eighth in the 1,000-meter time trial. At the 2016 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in Montichiari, Italy, he earned bronze in the scratch race. Two years later, he placed third in the individual pursuit at the 2018 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in Rio. He earned silver in pursuit and gold in kilo, scratch race, and omnium in 2020.
Van Gass won the gold and bronze medals in the men’s solo pursuit C3, mixed team sprint C1–5, and time trial C1–3 at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. Cycle-related contributions earned Van Gass an MBE in the 2022 New Year Honours.
