Professional Career
As a care assistant for troubled adolescents in the London Borough of Hackney, Boaden started her career in 1978. She produced The Boaden Review in 2018 on the future of Ireland’s orchestras for RTE, a public service broadcaster. She is the the head of the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, a member of the Royal Academy of Arts Council in London, the chair of the Audio Content Fund, and the vice chair of Cancer Care Map. She also serves as a non-executive member of the UK Statistics Authority.
Boaden was the first woman to hold the position of Head of BBC Business Programmes in 1997 and Head of BBC Current Affairs in 1998. Boaden was asked to temporarily resign from her position as Director of BBC News in December 2012. She was appointed director of radio in February 2013. Boaden received a Sony Award for a documentary about AIDS in Africa, Industrial Society in 1990 for her work on safety regulations in the oil sector. She was ranked among the top 100 British women in terms of power by Woman’s Hour in February 2013.
