Forrest first gained widespread recognition for his role in When the Legends Die (1972), which led to a Golden Globe nomination for Most Promising Newcomer. He later received nominations for the Best Supporting Actor categories for the Academy and Golden Globe Awards for his role of Huston Dyer in the musical drama The Rose (1979).
Forrest worked with Francis Ford Coppola on four other films, including The Conversation (1974), One from the Heart (1982), Hammett (1982), and Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988). Forrest played Jay ‘Chef’ Hicks in Coppola’s epic war movie Apocalypse Now (1979). The Missouri Breaks (1976), The Two Jakes (1990), Falling Down (1993), 21 Jump Street, Lonesome Dove, and Die Kinder are just a few of his other works.
