An early deaf identity and culture advocate was Ferdinand Berthier. Berthier asked the French government for permission to form the Société Centrale des Sourds-Muets in late 1837, which became the first deaf advocacy organisation the following year.
Berthier provided “mutual aid” and adult education seminars for deaf workers. Berthier delicately defended deaf identity and sign language in a harsh social and political atmosphere. Berthier featured deaf artists and sign-language poets in his publications about deaf history and culture.
