Professional Career
In the 1980s, LaChapelle was connected to the 303 Gallery, which featured artists including Doug Ait. LaChapelle received a job offer from Interview magazine after people from the publication saw his artwork displayed. LaChapelle first met Andy Warhol when he was 17 years old, and although he was still a high school student, Warhol hired him as a photographer for Interview. It is said that Warhol told LaChapelle, “Do anything you want. Just be certain that everyone looks well. Later, photographs by David LaChapelle may be seen on the covers and inside the pages of publications including Details, GQ, i-D, The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, The Face, Vanity Fair, Vogue Italia, and Vogue Paris.
LaChapelle’s photographs are renowned for being “crackle with subversive – or at least hilarious – ideas, rude energy, and laughter.” His work has been described as “meticulously created in a high-gloss, color-popping, hyper-realistic style.” They are brimming with delicious life. David LaChapelle filmed the infamous “kissing sailors” Diesel commercial in 1995. One of the earliest public ads depicting a gay or lesbian couple kissing was staged at the World War II peace celebration.
Its publication amid the height of the don’t ask, don’t tell controversy in the United States, which led to the government of that country banning openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual people from serving in the military, is largely responsible for its controversy. The advertisement was praised for having a “overarching tone of heavy-handed humour and sarcasm” in a lengthy piece by frieze published in 1996. Renzo Rosso, the founder and president of Diesel, who had initially approved and pushed for the advertising, remarked in September 2011 after President Barack Obama finally repealed the don’t ask, don’t tell statute, “16 years ago people wouldn’t stop whining about this ad. Finally, it has legal acceptance now.
The photographs by LaChapelle have developed a distinctive aesthetic that is exceptional, fresh, and completely recognisable. Several publications contain collections of his images. LaChapelle Land (1996), which is “highly valued by collectors,” was chosen as one of 101 “Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century.” A “garish, sexy, enchanting trip” was how one reviewer characterised his second book, Hotel LaChapelle (1999). Heaven to Hell (2006) contained “almost twice as many images as its predecessors” and “is an explosive compilation of new work by the visionary photographer.” LaChapelle’s limited-edition, signed, and numbered book, Artists and Prostitutes (2006), has 688 pages of images shot between 1985 and 2005. Taschen released Artists and Prostitutes, which features a photo of the publisher Benedikt Taschen participating in a sadomasochistic scene.
