Beginning as a student leader in the early 1980s, D.K. Shivakumar worked his way up through the Congress party’s ranks. He was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1989 from the Sathanur constituency in the Mysuru district, winning his first election.He ran for office on a Congress ticket when he was only 27 years old.In the ensuing assembly elections in 1994, 1999, 2004, 2008, 2013, and 2018, Shivakumar was re-elected from the same constituency.
In order to prevent 42 Gujarat Congress MLAs from defecting to another political party, he helped his party leadership move them into his resort in Bengaluru just before his election to the Rajya Sabha in 2017 from Gujarat. This eventually assisted Ahmed Patel in winning the election.Following the 2018 election, he is credited with being instrumental in the formation of the coalition government in Karnataka between the Indian National Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular).Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, the leaders of the party, regard him as a close confidant.One of India’s wealthiest politicians is Shivakumar. When he submitted his nomination for office in 2018, he listed 900 crore worth of assets.
The Income Tax Department searched Shivakumar’s home and office in Bengaluru on August 2, 2017, in relation to alleged tax fraud. Additionally, the Eagleton Golf Resort in Bidadi, a town outside of Bengaluru, which Shivakumar used and which was owned by his brother D. K. Suresh, was searched. It was revealed that 2 crore from other locations and 8 crore from Shivakumar’s Delhi home had been seized.On August 5, the raids came to an end with the recovery of allegedly nearly 300 crore in undisclosed income.He and his friends were released on anticipation bail.He was taken into custody in September 2019 on suspicion of money laundering and tax evasion. He described the accusations as “baseless.”
