Professional Career
Alfie Hewett was born with a congenital heart defect that required surgery at the age of six months. In addition, Hewett suffered from Legg–Calvé–Perthes disease, a disorder that prevents blood from flowing from the pelvis to the hip joint. Both of these conditions required surgery at the age of six months. Since he was six years old, he has been confined to a wheelchair due to the serious impairment that has been caused to his ability to walk. Hewett is able to walk, but his mobility is limited in the traditional sense, therefore he is unable to participate in activities that are designed for people with able bodies.
Hewett is a 23-time major winner, having won seven titles in the singles competition and sixteen wins in the doubles competition, all of which were earned in partnership with Gordon Reid. In 2021, the duo won the Grand Slam, becoming the first wheelchair men’s doubles team to achieve it since Stéphane Houdet in 2014. The Grand Slam was completed by the couple. Hewett has also been awarded a silver medal at the Paralympics three times, and he has triumphed in the Wheelchair Tennis Masters in both the singles and doubles competitions in 2017 and 2021.
